MARCH

Date : Mar 14, 2009 To Mar 15, 2009
Introductory Stone Carving Weekend
Instructor : Bill Nutt
Fees : $250
Two full days of hand carving technique and stone carving lore introduce the beginner to reductive art-making and three-dimensional thinking. Use of the Studio’s tools and a moderate piece of Vermont marble are included in the fee. Discussions of safe studio practices and stone and tool sourcing help make this two-day course an excellent initiation to the craft of stone sculpture.

JUNE

Date : Jun 15, 2009 To Jun 19, 2009
Wood Carving
Instructor : Rod Northcutt
Fees : $575

Thorough knowledge of woodworking, from the log up and the grain out, is often best developed through traditional hand skills, and this can be uniquely enhanced with the revival of pre-industrial machines and techniques. In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of both carving and turning (which is essentially concentric carving) using traditional hand tools and non-electric lathes, along with some green woodworking techniques added for good measure.

Carving and riving (splitting) will be taught using axe, adz, handsaw, froe, chisel, gouge, slick, and rasp. For turning, participants can learn how to form both spindle and bowl forms using treadle-, spring-pole-, and bow-powered lathes in large and small formats. In a similar method, a parser bow-drill will be used to create inlays. Green wood will be shaped using shaving horses, drawknives and spoke-shaves.

The class also features guided discussions on contemporary and historical artists, craftspeople, and designers that have employed such traditional methods in their work. Additionally, the old-school content of the class will be complemented by an investigation of some local edible plants, natural drinks, and even the construction of a lashed yurt sweat-lodge. Experimentation and collaboration will be encouraged as students work to create their own engaging art, craft, or design.

Date : Jun 22, 2009 To Jun 26, 2009
Iron Forging Techniques
Instructor : Ray Ciemny
Fees : $625
Participants using hammer and anvil at the forge in this hands-on, five-day workshop will learn traditional iron working techniques through a progressive series of projects. This seemingly unyielding medium can be skillfully transformed when heated. Hot iron hammered, twisted, carved and reshaped will be transformed into floral, animal and other decorative ironwork. Safety, history, tool making, finishing, joinery and design considerations are among the topics covered. Individual workstations and tools provided. Skills learned early in the week will be utilized to go beyond basic craft to create personal expressive work.

JULY

Date : Jul 6, 2009 To Jul 10, 2009
Direct Stone Carving
Instructor : Nora Valdez
Fees : $575
Learn the art of stone carving from hand chiseling to finishing with optional polishing; as well as the use of form, volume and texture to produce desired effects. Explore the direct carving method of releasing the form the artist sees from within the stone. Imagery may include figurative or abstract subject matter, depending on individual preference. We will work in limestone or marble. Open to all levels.

Date : Jul 11, 2009 To Jul 12, 2009
Advanced Stone Carving Techniques
Instructor : Bill Nutt
Fees : $275
This two-day intensive workshop will cover copying, reduction and enlargement techniques used in stone carving.  The use of templates, three compasses, pointing machines, three-dimensional pantographs and other techniques will be covered.  Participants should be reasonably competent at stone carving.

AUGUST

Date : Aug 1, 2009 To Aug 2, 2009
Introductory Stone Carving
Instructor : Ryder Owens

Date : Aug 10, 2009 To Aug 14, 2009
Steel Sculpture
Instructor : Wendy Klemperer
Fees : $625

In this workshop participants will learn the fundamentals of gas, arc, and MIG welding, oxy-fuel cutting, bending, and forging, and surface treatments of steel.  Participants will acquire a working technique of welding that can immediately be applied to art making. Additionally, an ongoing discussion of the history of sculpture and the origins of welded sculpture will inform the class and serve as a point of departure.

The class will take advantage of the environment the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center offers - its large resource of scrap steel, and the open-air studio to work freely in various sizes. While experimentation and collaboration will be encouraged, the objective of the five-day course is to enable the participant to confidently execute basic welding techniques to construct sculptural objects.
