Did you know the marble in Vermont originated in vast ancient coral reefs? This workshop invites you to choose your favorite seashell and carve it in stone derived from the very same stuff! This class will also serve as an introduction to the process of sculptural enlargement. Even the smallest scallop can be enlarged to a bowl-sized sculpture with the simple use of calipers and basic geometry! The skills taught in this class are a fun introduction to techniques used by professionals in figurative and architectural stone carving around the world, that can be built upon for a lifetime of exploration in stone. Finished sculptures should stay within 1 cubic foot in volume, and students are encouraged to arrive with a chosen design. Participants should have prior stone carving experience.
