The Italian machinetta or "pointing machine" is the traditional method for transferring points (measurements) from a plaster model to marble. Invented in the late 1700s, the machinetta was improved in the 1800s to become the instrument we use today, allowing the sculptor to create concepts in clay and reproduce the final sculpture in stone via a one-to-one ratio.

In this workshop we will learn how to set up the cross piece and three principle points necessary to use the machinetta. We will practice the correct method of the phases of work, from roughing out through transferring the final points accurately from the model to the stone.

Each participant will bring or choose a mask (face) as a model to be copied, measuring between 10"x9"x6" and 9"x8"x6". This will provide a life-size head from the end of the nose to the ear to create a high-relief sculpture. The model should be a general form with large planes and no fine detail. Starting blocks of stone will measure 12"x10"x8".

Participants will be able to choose between limestone and marble, although please note that limestone, being easier to carve than marble, will allow the student to better focus on the machinetta technique and realize a more complete sculpture by the end of the workshop.
