Introduction to Wood Carving for Sculpture

This hands-on week long workshop focuses on three-dimensional object-making through wood as a medium. We will explore a wide variety of foundational tools and techniques for cutting, shaping, joining, and finishing wooden objects, with a special focus on hard carving softwoods. In addition to that, the workshop will also feature short lunch talks focusing on the cultural and artistic history of wood as a material, and the ways that it’s ecology and harvesting shape the material itself, and thus what forms it produces in sculpture. The primary goal of this course is to develop an integration of informed, intuitive approaches to using and thinking about wood as a material within a student’s larger way of working.
