In this four-week evening workshop, beginner and intermediate carvers will learn the skill of relief carving in stone by an instructor with over fifty years experience serving the commercial stone industry. Each student will be instructed in how to establish the background depth, lay out and carve the contours of the form desired, and sculpt the final details. Textures and appropriate finishing techniques for stone will also be covered. For those participants with previous experience, more advanced instruction is available to hone their skills further.

All students will be provided with bankers, hand tools, and the option for pneumatic tools and chisels. You can bring you own stone, or remnants will offered for sale in marble or limestone. Visual references are required for this class; students are encouraged to bring their own models or simple examples will be provided. We recommend that participants keep the scale of their models manageable and small in scale in order to develop as much as possible in the time allowed. Some model ideas could include symbology, floral designs, geometric shapes or anatomical or abstract forms. The techniques taught can then be applied to more advanced projects by the student as they progress on their own.

Class runs on Thursday Evenings for four weeks: October 16, 23, 30, and November 6 indoors from 6-8pm at the Carving Studio.

Please note that stone is not included in this workshop fee: Students are welcome to bring their own limestone or marble, or purchase it at the studio for a small fee.
