Wood Sculpture: Putting it Together - July 6-10
Wood Sculpture: Putting it Together - July 6-10
This workshop will explore both traditional joinery in wood as well as the natural pairing of shaped and fabricated metal to connect shaped pieces of wood.
Applications and uses for traditional Western and Japanese joints, including variations of mortise and tenon, dovetail and spline joints will be discussed and demonstrated.
Complementing the basics of squaring, measuring, marking and cutting joints in wood, this course will include an introduction to welding and fabricating steel: Nails, screws, bolts, staples are all effective means of connecting pieces of wood, and all can be welded or used to supplement “wood only” joints, for practical, aesthetic and either permanent or temporary/modular design.
Over the course of the week, a wide arrange of tools and methods will be covered, with safety, practicality, versatility and design aesthetic in mind. Some materials and a range of tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own wood or steel and favorite tools.
All levels of experience are encouraged. This course is designed both as a stand-alone experience, or as an extension of the “Reshaping Trees” workshop.
